World Competitiveness Results: Implications & Insights for Organizations

The last three years have taught us that global phenomena, national policies, and geopolitical issues are more important at determining the fate of companies than any internal driver of performance such as leadership or firm strategy. Therefore, understanding what makes companies successful within their national and international context is extremely important for executives today.

The IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook, first published in 1989, is a comprehensive annual report and worldwide reference point on the competitiveness of countries. It provides benchmarking and trends as well as statistics and survey data based on extensive research. It analyzes and ranks countries according to how they manage their competencies to achieve long-term value creation. An economy’s competitiveness cannot be reduced only to GDP and productivity because enterprises also have to cope with political, social, and cultural dimensions. Governments therefore need to provide an environment characterized by efficient infrastructures, institutions and policies that encourage sustainable value creation by the enterprises.

Our work has shown that competitive nations develop competitive companies, so we propose an event to discuss the relationship between the two.

Outcomes

• Understand the concept of country competitiveness.
• Discuss the pitfalls of measuring and managing competitiveness.
• Analyze the interaction between a country’s private and public sectors as a key prosperity indicator.

Who is this for

Senior executives, policymakers and leaders in non-for-profit organizations and international agencies who are interested in understanding what makes nations successful.
