Does your board meet these seven sustainability tests?

Matthias Altendorf  explains how boards should reframe sustainability as a mechanism for long-term survival.

Adopting a future-oriented lens

The current political noise around sustainability may tempt boards to stay quiet and do the minimum by simply meeting regulatory requirements. This is a mistake: boards need to invest more time in sustainability – including scrutinizing its values and returns – but ensure that they invest in the projects that make a difference to the bottom line. Test whether your board is heading in the right direction by asking these questions:

  1. Are we treating sustainability as a mechanism for resilience, rather than a moral or legal obligation?
  2. Do our sustainability initiatives sit within an overall value proposition?
  3. Do they align with our other business goals?
  4. Are we stress-testing the organization against future crises?
  5. Are we identifying new markets that enable long-term sustainability?
  6. Are we protecting our culture as we pursue growth, ensuring that we do not compromise our organizational values during periods of uncertainty?
  7. Are we treating financial returns as just one measure of value, recognizing that short-term expense may be outweighed by long-term value creation, market share gains, and corporate longevity?

Key takeaway

Boards must avoid both overzealous advocacy of sustainability without strategic discipline and apathetic disengagement disguised as pragmatism. Longevity lies in a balanced, rigorous approach to sustainability as a driver of economic success.
