DCM Data Systems: Forging ahead in times of rapid change
DCM Data Systems Company, a software/hardware firm with headquarters in Delhi, India, is part of a family-controlled conglomerate. The case shows how the CEO successfully carries out a financial turnaround in an environment characterized by very rapid and substantial change on two levels–the computer industry is evolving very fast and growing by leaps and bounds; and the business environment is turned upside down by the drastic 1992 reductions in import duties. With agility and energy, DCM swiftly climbs up the value chain, within three short years evolving from an engineering-driven to an opportunity-driven full service provider. The case is best used to illustrate: Growth through innovation (the ‘innovation’ being the business idea), change management in a highly turbulent business environment, and specific managerial aspects of family-owned business.
