Mobility carsharing: An IT leadership crisis
The case focuses on the challenges of overhauling the entire information technology infrastructure that forms the backbone of Mobility Car Sharing, a car sharing pioneer that has a monopoly of the Swiss market. The process of transforming that infrastructure ran into serious problems, which threatened to undermine the entire business. The management board hired a new CIO who became the first IT officer to sit on Mobility’s executive board. Within days of taking her new role, the CIO was faced with the dilemma of what to do about the failing IT project, which was internally disruptive and provided only a questionable technical foundation for the new system.
1) Understanding the vital importance that IT Systems can play in the enduring success of a business. 2) Recognizing the need for a chief information officer whose role is positioned at the executive level.
