The case describes the effect of the break-up of Yugoslavia and the introduction of a market economy on Slovenia’s largest bank, Ljubljanska Banka. The extensive change process embarked upon by the new bank president is discussed, in particular how he overcame resistance within the top management ranks by building a team of supporters and beginning to empower middle and lower managers. The case enables discussion on overcoming resistance to change, building teams, empowering managers and implementing change processes in transition economies in East and Central Europe.
