In January 2024, CEO Christian Klein affirmed that AI was a “top strategic priority,” emphasizing the importance of responsible AI in its strategy. A Chief AI Officer was appointed to lead a new end-to-end AI business unit to infuse AI into the company’s portfolio. Internally, SAP reorganized to capture AI-driven efficiencies, even streamlining around 8% of its workforce while investing in reskilling programs to prepare employees for new AI-centric roles.  

Technologically, SAP has embedded AI across its major platforms. It rolled out AI-powered features in solutions like SAP S/4HANA Cloud, SuccessFactors, and the Business Technology Platform – notably via its generative AI copilot Joule™, which became integrated into around 80% of common tasks. Throughout, SAP stressed responsible AI, updating its ethical AI principles and governance.
