MBA alumnus authors new book on entrepreneurial management

9 ENTREPRENEURisms: Management Practice for a VUCA World
April 2017

A graduate of the MBA Class of 1989 at IMD, Anwar Jumabhoy, has successfully co-authored and published a new book exploring the concept of entrepreneurial management.

The book,9 ENTREPRENEURisms: Management Practice for a VUCA World, focuses on how managers can ignite their businesses by reshaping them to compete and cope with change, and attract the right leadership talent.

The concept of entrepreneurial management has grown in recent years as the global business environment has become increasingly competitive. Running a business of any size poses fresh challenges for managers — externally and equally internally, with the management of employees. The field of management has seen several initiatives emerge over the last 50 years that are related to entrepreneurship — re-engineering, innovation, and change management among them.

Having spent some six years with a Malaysian venture capital fund, Jumabhoy led investments in several companies and in addition, he works closely with entrepreneurs and chief executive officers as an active board member and business coach.

It is through this passion for growth enterprises that the inspiration for his book stems. Jumabhoy puts the success of companies down to their ability to think clearly and persevere through turmoil — only possible with a capable and committed, entrepreneurial management team.

It is this drive that he brings to the problem of managing large companies in fast-changing environments. Having experienced both entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship — entrepreneurship within a large corporation — he has further researched the subject and is now able to present a clear guide for leadership to deliver both growth and profit.

The entrepreneur is often misunderstood as the risk-taker, striving on their own. The book 9 ENTREPRENEURisms debunks this myth, and allows organizations to put in place a risk-moderated strategy — critical in today’s hyper-competitive business climate.

Jumabhoy was raised in Penang, Malaysia, before he moved abroad to live in several different countries. He attended university in England, UK, and completed his MBA at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland, before working in Singapore and Bologna, Italy, where he co-founded a technology business.

He worked for four years as director of operations at Tune Hotels, a company founded by Tony Fernandes of AirAsia, the world’s leading low-cost carrier.
