After the departure of their CEO in March 1993, the Leeds directors are looking for a replacement. The non-executive directors initially wish to appoint the CEO of a smaller building society but this would mean a merger between the two institutions. The executive directors oppose the candidacy and suggest alternative options. Merger talks revive an earlier debate over the strategic goals of the Leeds. The executive directors seize this opportunity to convince the reluctant majority of the board that a merger with a substantially bigger player, the Halifax building society, is the way to achieve the Leeds mission.
