Jan Ryan, CEO (B): Going home
The CEO is facing major strategic and leadership issues as outlined in the (A+B) cases. This case is set approximately one month later: Jan Ryan has decided to bring his top team to a week-long offsite that will begin their “must-win battles” journey, aimed at addressing the problems they face as a company and as a team. In the case, Ryan describes the issues raised by some of the first exercises the team undertakes together: hopes and fears, myths and taboos and conflict management with examples of the outputs from the team on each dimension. His reflections conclude with the potential for a serious conflict between Ryan and the group. The focus is on addressing both emotional (people) and intellectual (strategy) challenges. It forms the basis of a class discussion of how to manage the dual leadership and strategy challenges, including the conflicts that will occur in doing so, plus provides real world parallels that participants can relate to their own experiences.
