Frequently asked questions about General Management Programs
What is a General Management Program?

A General Management Program is executive education designed to help experienced managers and executives understand how organizations work as a whole and develop the capabilities to lead across functions. These programs build a broader business perspective, strengthen strategic thinking and leadership, and help participants navigate complexity, make better decisions and take on greater organizational responsibility. They are particularly relevant for functional leaders moving into broader general management roles and for senior executives looking to strengthen their overall leadership impact.

Is a General Management Program the same as an MBA or Executive MBA?

An MBA, Executive MBA and a General Management Program serve different purposes. An MBA and Executive MBA are postgraduate degrees covering a broad range of business disciplines. An MBA is typically aimed at professionals at an earlier stage in their careers, while an Executive MBA is designed to accelerate the development of experienced leaders aiming for greater impact at the highest levels of business. General Management Programs are usually shorter than an MBA or Executive MBA, with each program designed to develop specific business and leadership capabilities for experienced managers and executives who lead, or are preparing to lead, across the business.

What skills do General Management Programs help you develop?

General Management Programs develop the business and leadership capabilities needed to understand and lead organizations as a whole. Depending on the program, these can include business acumen, strategic thinking, decision-making, visionary leadership, negotiation and conflict management, team-building and interpersonal skills, and the ability to turn strategy into action. Together, these capabilities help leaders navigate complexity, work effectively across functions and take on broader organizational responsibility. Each program has a distinct focus, allowing you to choose the experience that best matches your leadership context, career stage and goals.

Not sure which program is right for you? Complete our short questionnaire and we’ll recommend the best-fit options based on your background, experience and leadership goals.

I’m not sure which program is right for me. Can IMD help?

Yes. The right program depends on your current role, leadership responsibilities, career goals and the transition or challenge you are facing. You can use our Program Finder or connect with a Program Advisor to identify the option that best fits your needs.

How long do General Management Programs typically last?

General Management Programs vary in length depending on their focus, format and level of depth. They range from intensive programs lasting a few days to more comprehensive learning journeys spanning several weeks or months, with on-campus, live virtual and blended formats available. Explore individual program pages to find the duration, format and schedule that best match your goals and availability.

How do I apply for an IMD General Management Program, and what are the admission requirements?

You can apply directly from the page of the General Management Program you are interested in. The application covers your professional background, education, current challenges and learning objectives, helping us assess your fit for the program. Admission requirements vary by program, so check the individual program page for specific details. If you need help choosing a program or have questions about admission, you can also speak with a Program Advisor.

Can my company sponsor or pay for my program?

Yes. Many organizations invest in executive education to prepare for evolving business challenges. The value of a General Management Program extends beyond personal development, strengthening leadership capabilities and contributing to business impact across the organization. If you are seeking company sponsorship, we can support you with relevant information, impact data and evidence to demonstrate the value of the program to your organization. Speak with a Program Advisor for support with your sponsorship request.

Will I receive a certificate or credential after completing the program?

All General Management Programs award an IMD certificate upon completion. The Program for Executive Development also awards the IMD Executive Certificate, an internationally accredited Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Business Leadership worth 20 ECTS credits.

Why do executives choose IMD?
