Company Engagement Projects

Individual projects required for the completion of the IMD MBA program will be structured to allow for a five week Company Engagement Project from July to early August.

IMD's MBA participants on average have seven years of international work experience, multiple language skills and, upon graduation, typically intend to change industry, geography or function. The individual project provides them with an opportunity to personalize their curriculum and develop specific skills and insights to facilitate that change. Based on the success of current projects, involving close cooperation with companies, the program as of 2015 strongly encourages such collaboration.

Some members of the class sought out short-term internships at company sites during their summer break, others worked in parallel to the second module of the program as external members of corporate project teams, others again undertook research for a consortia of companies delivering client-confidential information as well as important publishable results. In each case, companies not only appreciated the initiative taken by our participants, but their engagement translated into valuable insights, expanded professional networks and enhanced recruitment opportunities. Obviously, the specific format of company engagement will depend on the objective of each project, which participants will formulate after individual career counselling in mid-April.

Collaborating companies will benefit in a number of ways. In addition to an extra set of hands, IMD MBA participants bring with them novel perspectives, fresh ideas, and diversified strengths and skill sets. Also, participating companies have used the individual project to identify and 'test-drive' potential employees. There is no fee but we would request that in case of a residence requirement, the MBA participant's housing during the Company Engagement Project and travel expenses be reimbursed.

Within our project roadmap there are often early-stage ideas that we want to evaluate, explore or develop, which can benefit from external, well-researched and fresh viewpoints. Understanding the value proposition of the CEP early, we evaluated such opportunities and scoped CEPs with a highly interdisciplinary context, targeting IMD MBA candidates who are especially self-starting, curious, and skilled in navigating complexity and ambiguity. The high quality of insights and delivery in such short time, the uncomplicated setup and fluid collaboration, as well as the MBA candidates presence as knowledgeable and impartial sparring partners mean that we will definitely be considering further CEP opportunities in the future.
