A journey of self-exploration that enables you to undergo and sustain real transformation

IMD’s Transformational Leader program is a personalized transformation journey that unlocks the full potential of your leadership in three main stages – mindful, resilient and adaptive – followed by a fourth, optional stage.

The first three stages offer you more than 60 hours of real-time interaction with the Program Director, executive coaches and your peers, and include one-on-one coaching sessions.

Each stage drives rapid growth and development of a key leadership strength. The cumulative development of all three strengths creates a powerful and complete leadership journey, supercharging you with the awareness, resilience, and versatility to deliver much greater impact and successfully lead change – whatever your challenge.

All Transformational Leader alumni have the possibility of taking part in an optional face-to-face 3-day experience, which takes place in the Graubünden region of Switzerland. During this next-step stage, you will build on your learnings from the core program, go even deeper into your personal journey, and be challenged differently. 

Stage 1 – Mindful

Lead in the moment
LiVe virtual, 5 weeks, including reflection, coaching, and integration

Every moment is unique. Becoming a more mindful leader means being aware and attentive in the moment so you can make smarter decisions and deliver highly impactful results. Until you become aware, your existing roles, scripts and routines can be like leadership prisons. They restrict your choices and limit your impact as a leader.

  • Discover how to build your “mindfulness muscle”.
  • Deeply explore your authority, personal boundaries, and purpose.
  • Examine the roles, scripts, and routines that you rely on and consider effective alternatives.
  • Unlock powerful new approaches to your leadership.
Stage 2 – Resilient

Lead in complex contexts
LiVe virtual, 5 weeks, including reflection, coaching, and integration

Your leadership context is shaped by your teams and organization, and is usually a complex collection of competing needs and goals. These collectives can make you feel anxious or excited, confused or focused, competitive or invisible, etc. How can you successfully exercise your leadership role in these complex contexts?

  • Understand the dynamics of groups, teams, and organizations and the challenges they pose for your leadership.
  • Make sense of the patterns and dynamics of groups or collectives to which you belong.
  • Learn when to intervene and when not to; when to hold the tension and when to release it.
  • Explore effective techniques to intervene through powerful dialogue and discussion.
Stage 3 – Adaptive

Transform your future
LiVe virtual, 10 weeks, including reflection, coaching, and integration

Discover how your organization can learn, adapt and change, and how you can learn and grow as a leader at the same time. Understand that transformation is bigger than your plan or purpose. It is about your identity as a leader and as an organization.

  • Organize for adaptiveness: reorganize, re-energize, and engage people in new opportunities while being careful to preserve what needs to stay the same.
  • Experiment with different leadership tools that enable adaptability.
  • Inspire others to transform through effective dialogue and action.
  • Discover your “inner transformer” and take control of your destiny, that of your team, and that of your organization.
Stage 4 – Evolutive (optional*)

Challenge yourself in new ways
Switzerland, 3 days

Months or years after completing the three liVe virtual stages of Transformational Leader, continue your personal transformation face-to-face with other alumni, Program Director Ben Bryant, and a group of coaches during an optional stage in Guarda, Switzerland. This remote valley, at an altitude of more than 1,600 metres, is an ideal setting for the deep individual and collective reflection that will take you further on your journey 

  • Build on your learnings from the core Transformational Leader program. 
  • Go much deeper into your personal journey and be challenged differently by the face-to-face experience. 
  • Take part in powerful reflective and experiential exercises to understand your triggers, behaviors, relationships, and values.  
  • Learn about yourself through your peers’ experiences. 
  • Examine leadership – including power and authority – and your own context

The face-to-face stage of Transformational Leader was, for me, a logical closing of the learning cycle. I enjoyed the trust, openness and presence of my peers, and it was an opportunity to address the group’s latent needs. It reinforced a mindset that makes me more resilient, balanced, and capable of backing my team – even in tough situations – with trust, inspiration, and energy.

True transformation takes time

We all know that transformation takes time. The liVe virtual format of the core program allows you to reflect on your learning between each module with the support of your coach.

Personalized coaching

Your leadership coach supports and guides you every step of the way, working with the small “home group” you will be part of, and with you individually. You will experiment and dare to practice new ways of leading in a safe, trusting environment.

Learning through exploration

Powerful, reflective, and experiential exercises and simulations enable you to explore aspects of your leadership you have never considered, and grow in unexpected ways.
