Semi-submersible heavy-lift transport (C): Offshore heavy transport
This is the third case in a series starting in 1981 (A) and 1983 (B). In 1997, John Nielsen, the naval architect and the designer of the earlier Swan class heavy lift semi-submersible carriers (Cases A and B), was approached by a new entrant to invest in a new class of much larger heavy lift carriers. As a background of the proposal, the experience and performance of the Swan class carriers was reviewed. The case describes the various changes of ownership of the Swan class carriers and gives some background on the expected economic opportunity for the new Marlin class carriers to be built. The case is written from a potential investor point of view. Nielsen must decide if he wants to become an investor, together with other ship owners.
