Who Is The Most Future-Ready Pharmaceutical Firm?
If there is one industry that will become recession-proof in 2023, it’s healthcare. During the last great recession (December 2007 to June 2009), healthcare spending didn’t curtail. In fact, healthcare employment expanded, increasing by 852,000 (6.6 percent). In other words, employment in healthcare didn’t mirror that of the overall economy.
Pharmaceutical companies will undergo very similar dynamics in 2023. Why? Because they don’t compete like smartphone makers or fashion brands. Indeed, the pharmaceutical market represents the opposite of perfect competition.
Prescriptive drugs are highly regulated, and a new drug cannot launch without the FDA approving it. Instead of being determined by market forces, prices are negotiated with the government and then, in most situations, accepted by insurers. In the end, users like you and me don’t have any choice but to follow a doctor’s prescription.
But there could still be a crisis among pharmaceutical companies, and not an economic one: it will be social and reputational. Government, regulators, patient groups, and insurers are all asking the same question: Why is healthcare getting so expensive? Think about a car, a computer, a washing machine, or a TV. The costs of these items never rise above inflation; in many cases, they drop dramatically over the decades. But after years of commercialization, the cost of drugs—such as insulin for diabetics—keeps rising.
No wonder, then, why we see top-ranking pharmaceutical companies like Roche, Pfizer, and AstraZeneca all embrace purpose as the center of growth.

In the world of pharmaceuticals, it’s too easy to think that mRNA vaccines are game changers. But what they really highlight is something much deeper. As a result, top-performing companies tend to have a stronger drug pipeline. More drug candidates are being scheduled for clinical trials, especially those in the advanced stages. All together, they are expanding into more therapeutic areas.
By having a broad portfolio, you are essentially diversifying risks.
The race toward new capabilities is very real in the pharmaceutical industry; specifically, it’s integrating computational science and machine learning into the old worlds of chemistry and biology. For example, artificial intelligence helps reveal protein misfolding, which occurs during different biochemical processes and leads to the development of cancer. In another case, an AI system developed by BioNTech identified numerous high-risk Covid variants months before the World Health Organization’s (WHO) tracking system flagged them.
What’s the implication of all this? Future-ready pharmaceutical companies are those who plow their financial return into not only typical R&D activities but also new scientific competencies involving AI and machine learning. No longer are they only recruiting life-science experts but also seeking out data geeks and software programmers. It’s a different type of laboratory they are building.
It’s a virtuous cycle. The stronger the financial performance, the more you can afford to invest in both traditional R&D and new capabilities. That takes more than just financial discipline. After all, maximizing in the short term is tempting. That’s why the purpose of a firm must remain the ultimate true north.
