In 2022, BHP chief executive Mike Henry highlighted the company’s commitment to cutting-edge advancements stating that technology and innovation are areas of particular focus. BHP’s AI strategy is focused on enhancing precision in exploration, improving predictive maintenance, and optimizing operational efficiency across its mining operations. In partnership with external providers, BHP uses AI to evaluate legacy exploration data, as well as real-time data to allow for new mineral discoveries and to reduce unnecessary drilling.
AI also plays a crucial role in predictive maintenance. By analyzing sensor data from equipment, BHP’s AI systems can predict when maintenance is required, minimizing unexpected breakdowns and costly downtime. These predictive models run across much of BHP’s global fleet, providing real-time insights into machine health. Sensor data is also used to reduce the risk of accidents. At Escondida in Chile, BHP integrated smart hard hat sensor technology to measure truck driver fatigue by analyzing brain waves.
