What
IMAGINE
Imagine a world where you are constantly questioning the present you have and pushing the boundaries of what could be next. Imagine a world where you are making personal and lasting differences to the people around you, the places in which they work and the organizations in which you operate. Imagine a world that is actually the exact future you want to live in as a general manager.
At this stage in your career, you have no doubt demonstrated your business acumen and learned to get results through other people as well. But as you become a more senior executive, it is also your responsibility to effectuate meaningful change. After all, you are on stage all the time. What you say, and do not say, what you do, and do not do, where you spend your time, and how you display your energy are all seen with a magnifying glass by the people around you, and has a strong impact on the choices that people make and the ways in which you touch their lives.
- You might be ready for this challenge but are you sufficiently prepared?
- Are you challenging yourself and others enough to become more than what you are today?
- To grow into a space that only you can fill?
PED is a general management program for proven executives who want to augment their role in business and society. It is a program for those who are asking to be challenged in everything they do because that is the only way they can ensure they will make a difference with the decisions they make.
If you are a proven executive who wants to "push the envelope" and interact with some of the brightest minds in the world of management theory and practice, we urge you to explore this new PED. It will give you the knowledge, the tools and skills you need to develop innovative ideas and strategies that will enhance the value you personally create, for yourself and for others, as a global executive and as a general manager.
For you:
- Create a concrete plan for impact
- Develop core operational abilities
- Strengthen your leadership qualities
- Experience firsthand what is happening in peer organizations and new markets
- Benchmark with similarly successful and aspirational executives across industries and geographies
For your organization:
- Develop people who can create positive change
- Encourage top talent
- Take action on a project of strategic interest
- Engage in the individuals' learning process
- Expand the possibility horizon through new ideas, innovations and opportunities
- Establish a global network of executive peers
How
A tailored program
PED is designed around two residential modules of four weeks each and one remote bridge, during which you take part in a job exchange experience, join a discovery trip and complete a self-defined and self-directed learning project.
Module one: Visioning your future
Phase I: Understand - A focus on the essential set of skills and competencies that general managers must possess in order to be successful on the job.
We approach these business fundamentals in new ways, organizing them in a framework that highlights the fundamental shifts it takes to become an effective general manager:
- From specialist to generalist
- From analyst to integrator
- From tactician to strategist
- From bricklayer to architect
- From warrior to diplomat
- From problem-solver to problem-finder
- From supporting cast to lead role
Phase II: Be aware - A cross-disciplinary exploration of the key challenges faced by organizations and their general managers today-and likely in years to come.
We discuss key social and industry trends, uncertainties in the economic climate, political factors, technological evolutions, and changes in customer needs that will require innovative approaches to the way general managers conceptualize their business as they prepare their organization for the future.
The Bridge: Make Sense - Create links between what you have learned in the first module and what you want to accomplish in the second by getting out of your comfort zone in three ways:
1. Job exchange experience
You visit the office of another PED participant (not in a competitor company) and observe each other in action over a week or trade jobs for a week. Facilitated by IMD's team of professional coaches, you will set objectives for your exchange, conduct regular debriefs and share impressions of what was observed and learned.
As a result, you will:
- Become familiar with another industry, company and location
- Gain an understanding of the type of challenges your PED colleagues face in their specific business contexts
- Develop insights on leadership practices, to be further explored in module two
2. Discovery expedition
Offered in three different locations every year, discovery expeditions provide you with unique challenges and learning opportunities. Each participant is required to join a minimum of one discovery expedition (though may participate in more at additional charge), which must be completed prior to starting module two. Example trips include the following (though destinations change from year to year):
- Work with rural farmers in Africa
- Construct your legacy in the history of London
- See growth in its raw form in Ho Chi Minh City
- Develop innovative solutions for the bottom of the pyramid in India
As a result, you will:
- Be inspired to think differently and become a general manager that plays an essential positive force for change in the world
- Broaden your horizons through interaction with local stakeholders, NGOs, public authorities, local businesses, and economists
- Face new challenges related to ethics/sustainability/corporate social responsibility or the idea of shared value
3. Self-directed learning project
You define the project you want to undertake as part of your journey from the present you have to the future you desire. Approved by the program directors, these completely individual projects are facilitated by IMD program managers, the IMD InfoCenter, coaches, other PED participants and participants' sponsors, as relevant to the project.
As a result, you will:
- Develop an action plan to advance a specific challenge
- Receive individualized learning inputs
- Experience a direct positive change upon leaving the program
Module 2: Building your future
Phase III: Create
Learn from the latest technology and process innovations, and immediately apply this new knowledge to your individual self-directed learning project. Predominantly facilitative, this phase involves prototyping, testing, revising and transforming activities, with formal checkpoints both for project progress and for learning and leadership advancement progress measures.
Creating features:
- Effectuation
- Design thinking
- Surprise
- Prototyping: testing
- Revisions: refinement
Phase IV: Commit
In this final phase, you commit to a concrete plan of action, which involves engaging with your teams, organizations and countries in new ways. You will be challenged to think big, but also to start small by doing things concretely.
Commitment features:
- Getting people into action
- Mapping your stakeholders
- Engaging with your stakeholders
- Communication
- Negotiation
- Gaining commitment
IMAGINE
Participation in IMD's Program for Executive Development turns "imagine" into "action", through:
| GROWTH Visualize and create the future you want to live in as mature general manager on personal, organizational and societal levels. | |
| CHALLENGE Leverage this development opportunity to extend your limits and strengthen your ability to take on tough challenges | |
| PERSONALIZATION Take on projects of specific personal/organizational interest and application, and receive more individualized learning inputs from coaches, mentors and sponsor (in addition to program faculty). | |
| REALITY Connect classroom learning with what is going on outside in a tangible way that challenges you to get your hands dirty and exposes you to situations taking you out of your comfort zone. | |
| IMPACT Generate positive change that can be attributed to your interaction with the program. |
Our Faculty
Our Faculty members are recognized world authorities in their fields. They divide their time between teaching, research and acting as consultants to international companies. They remain on top of the latest management trends.
You can expect timely, innovative learning activities, materials and content in all IMD programs.
