Introduction
Family business research is a vital activity of the IMD Global Family Business Center. Since the launch of Leading the Family Business (LFB) in 1988, research has been a core activity in the development of IMD's family business programs.
Our research is based on "real life." It embraces a complete array of the complex challenges family businesses are facing. The IMD family business research differentiates itself through a multi-disciplinary approach, recognizing the need for rigorously analyzing how "softer" emotional and personality driven issues interact with the "harder" business, strategy and governance driven issues.
Furthermore IMD focuses on research on leading, multi-generational family businesses around the globe. Insights from different countries and cultures add richness to a learning agenda and often lead to more creative applications and solutions. Our highly applied and practice-oriented approach in the classroom erases the divide between research and practice, and our easy-to-use frameworks and structures facilitate discussion and implementation.
Our faculty divides their time between teaching, carrying out research and acting as consultants to major family businesses in many industries. This ensures that they remain firmly on top of the latest developments in managerial practice and that they can draw on this experience to create a particularly effective learning environment that is highly conducive to tackling the critical issues family business leaders and owners are facing today.
Ongoing research ensures that our programs contain new ideas and insights. Over the past two decades, our faculty and research team have published an impressive variety of outputs including case studies, newspaper and magazine articles, journal articles and books. IMD cases cover companies and industries on all continents, with many of them being award winners and being used by other institutes around the world.
