IMD business school for management and leadership courses
World Competitiveness Center
The World Competitiveness Center is now in its fourth decade of worldwide recognition for its research on how nations and enterprises compete to lay the foundations for future prosperity.
In 2023, we continued cooperating with an ever-growing network of partner institutes, which now span almost 60 countries. Our principal output is research for governments, businesses, and academia, alongside our perennial global competitiveness rankings that measure economies’ digital prowess, talent pools, smart city statuses, and sustainable trade credentials.
“In our eyes, the term ‘sustainability’ is a fancy new label for an old concept; it means the ability of companies and nations to preserve the prosperity of future generations. This concept is no different from the concept of ‘competitiveness,’ which we started studying more than 30 years ago. Reporting our sustainability contributions is synonymous with describing absolutely everything we do.”
Our 2023 Rankings and Indexes
We produced five rankings with accompanying reports in 2023:
- The IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook
- The IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking
- The IMD World Talent Ranking
- The Hinrich-IMD Sustainable Trade Index (STI)
- The IMD Smart City Index
We were delighted to collaborate with the Hinrich Foundation in Singapore and WeGO in Seoul for the latter two rankings.
In 2023, our flagship World Competitiveness Ranking saw Denmark (first), Ireland, and Switzerland atop the rankings. Agile governance and good access to markets were common features of the highest-performing economies among the 64 we measured.
For the Talent, Digital, and STI rankings, we were delighted to offer viewers a new and improved interactive visualization of our data set via our website, thanks to a fruitful cross-collaboration with other IMD departments.
