Peter Vogel features in Poets & Quants Best 40 Under 40 MBA professors list

May 2022

Poets & Quants has named Peter Vogel, IMD Professor of Family Business and Entrepreneurship, as one of the Best 40 Under 40 MBA professors worldwide in its 10th annual list.

Professor Vogel, who serves as Director of IMD’s Global Family Business Center, is the holder of the Debiopharm Chair for Family Philanthropy and directs the IMD Global Family Business Award, teaches family business insights to MBAs at IMD and also provides expertise for the IMD Startup Competition.

The co-author of the Family Philanthropy Navigator and the Family Office Navigator (due to be published in Q3 2022) said it was “a great honor” to be chosen from more than 2,000 nominations in the 2022 edition of the prestigious annual list. The list, published by business education content platform Poets & Quants, awards the best business school teachers under the age of 40 who have been nominated by students, alumni, faculty and staff.

“I am thrilled to be selected, especially given that my focus area on family businesses isn’t necessarily on top of every MBA student’s mind,” Vogel said. “Family business is not an everyday topic for an MBA class, so it makes it even more special as it seems the MBAs have seen the value in understanding family businesses, how they work, and what is different and unique about them – there is great value in that cross-learning. It also underlines the economic and social impact that enterprising families have in the world.”

He added that teaching MBAs was a highly rewarding experience that offered valuable diversity from delivering executive education programs and an inspiring, intense environment to strive for excellence.

“It’s fun because they all really want to be there,” he said. “As such, they have the expectation that they will learn something new and relevant in every single session. That challenges us to not stand still.”

Alongside teaching MBAs at IMD, Vogel works with families, owners, boards and executives of family enterprises and family offices around the world, focusing on areas such as transformations, governance, ownership and leadership succession, wealth management, entrepreneurship and innovation.

A frequently referenced family business expert, he has published in peer-reviewed journals such as Entrepreneurship, Theory and Practice, written a number of books and featured in media outlets such as the Harvard Business Review, CNN, the Huffington Post and the Financial Times.

Named as one of the “Top 100 Family Influencers” in 2020 and 2022 by Family Capital, Vogel is an Associate Partner of the Cambridge Family Enterprise Group and part of the expert network of the World Economic Forum. He is also the Chairman of Delta Venture Partners, an early-stage venture boutique. He earned his Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship from the Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship Institute of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
