Team spirits prevail as IMD participates in the

Paddle for Cancer Dragonboat Festival

September 9, 2011

For the third consecutive year IMD joined forces with leading local and international companies in sponsoring the Paddle for Cancer Dragonboat Festival in L’Abbaye, Switzerland on September 4th.

In sponsoring two dragon boats, 35 employees from IMD fought Mother Nature’s rain and participated in the fundraising event, organized by the ESCA, the English Speaking Cancer Association. IMD President Dominique Turpin met the wet paddlers in showing his support for the event and helping motivate IMD’s teams.

“The weather certainly wasn’t ideal for rowing,” IMD’s PCFA Team Leader Kathy Schwarz said. “But irony had its place. Things aren’t always bright in the fight against cancer. It’s the spirit of people that prevails, and the spirit of IMD’s teams and other dragonboat paddlers that kept the race focused on its mission.”

In addition to coming together for a good cause, the fun and informality of race day serves many other purposes.

“In the boats, IMD’s teams did significantly better than last year,” IMD Executive Director Jim Pulcrano said. “But a lot of what dragonboat racing is about is getting to better know colleagues and others in the community. The Dragonboat Festival always succeeds when it comes to networking, both internally and in the community.”

This marks the fifth year ESCA has organized the festival, aiming to raise awareness about cancer and to encourage those with cancer to live full and active lives.
