The Zegna Group

Founded 1910
Milan, Italy

The Zegna Group is widely considered the world leader in fine men’s clothing. Zegna was founded by Angelo Zegna in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. Born in 1859 the fourth child of a farmer, Angelo built a textile manufacturing plant and had a family of ten children. His sons worked in the factory and when Angelo died in 1923, Ermenegildo, the youngest child emerged as the next leader of the family business.

The Zegna Group is a totally integrated business, controlling the entire value chain from raw materials right through to the final sale of a finished product to the customer. It is a successful business which has built on traditions and values as defined by earlier generations but which each generation has successfully redefined and adapted to the changed world.

Best Family Business practices from the Zegna Group

  • Compelling vision: creating a totally integrated business model which allows the consistent pursuit of highest quality and closeness to the customer.

  • Re-interpreting the founders legacy: each generation built on the tradition by re-interpreting the «closeness to customer» legacy by adding new strategic value.
  • Credible leadership: each generation acts as responsible and credible owner manager leaders by example, as they are also driven by the emotional ownership of the expanded strategy moves.
  • Family roles and values: functional separation of family members provides clarity and boundaries reflected in a professional governance structure with non-family guidance and facilitation.  Respect for and transmission of values from generation to generation provides cohesiveness of the family and guiding principles for their behaviour.
  • Giving back: respect for the environment and recognition of social responsibilities are strong educational guiding principles for each generation’s humility.
