BUSINESS CASE FOR SUSTAINABILITYCSM's comprehensive studies on the economic rationale for corporate sustainability and its quantification |
About the BCS study
IMD's Forum for Corporate Sustainability Management is a leader in one of today's most significant research areas of sustainability management: The Business Case for Sustainability (or BCS).
Since September 2002 and in partnership with the conservation organization WWF, we have conducted a project involving more than 350 interviews in 16 countries and analyzed more than 1,000 questionnaires in nine industry sectors to examine manager's perceptions and attitudes towards the economic rationale for corporate sustainability.
The sustainable business case – Establishing a sound research base for the development of a case-building tool·
See also the article: The Business Case for Corporate Sustainability, European Management Journal (2005) by Salzmann, Ionescu-Somers and Steger.
In a follow-up study, we examined to what extent companies are willing and able to quantify the business case, and what drives or hinders quantification efforts.

Find out more about the external barriers to corporate sustainability – above all, a lack of interest from stakeholders – by looking at our recent study “Inside the Mind of the Stakeholder”.

The Business of Sustainability: Building industry cases for corporate sustainability

‘This book presents groundbreaking conclusions on a subject that has become highly relevant to modern-day corporations: the economic reasons why companies integrate social and environment into business strategy. I would advise any business executive who is seeking an overview or indeed a focused industry perspective on this issue to read this book. Based on solid empirical foundations, it is, to my knowledge, also the first-ever comprehensive attempt to look at the business case for sustainability from an industry-specific perspective.’
