Building on the professional and personal experiences of Unilever's former Board Member and President Europe, IMD publishes the new book Defining Moments.
Mostly autobiographical, the book highlights the "defining moments" of IMD Executive-in-Residence Kees van der Graaf. Through personal stories and anecdotes, Van der Graaf openly shares his process of self-discovery and delivers a message for business leaders - companies should have a purpose beyond bringing financial return to shareholders.
Van der Graaf presents a method for establishing total dynamic balance and, finding equilibrium in his own life, uses the book to raise awareness of FSHD - the facio-scapulo humeral form of muscular dystrophy. At a critical moment in Van der Graaf's career, his oldest son was diagnosed with the disease - news that would not only change his life, but influence his approach to leadership and propel him on the path to discovering total dynamic balance.
The book also features columns from prominent leaders, such as Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; Poul Weihrauch, President, Wrigley Europe; David Simon, Lord Simon of Highbury; Reinier Kelder, Chief Procurement Officer, CSM NV; and James Hill, Chairman, Unilever Italy. On May 6th the first books will be presented to the Dutch Prime Minister and to the CEO of Unilever, Paul Polman, at a symposium in Amsterdam on the future characteristics of leaders.
