What are the admissions requirements?

MBA Admissions Criteria

What is the minimum GMAT score?
There is no minimum requirement - a high score does not guarantee admission and a lower score does not necessarily eliminate an applicant. The average score is 670, with 80% being between 610 - 750.

What is the minimum GRE score?
Candidates need to score at or above the 75-80th percentile for both the quantitative and verbal sections of the GRE.

Are interviews part of the admissions process?
Yes. Candidates whose application passes the first assessment of the admissions committee are invited for an interview at IMD.

What is your application fee?
CHF 350

How much is the tuition fee, what does it cover?
The 2012 fees are CHF 60,000 for tuition and CHF 25,000 for all program and project related fees including:

  • all books, cases and teaching materials
  • personal development elective
  • travel expenses for the Discovery Expedition and  International Consulting Projects
  • Community building activities
  • A four-course lunch at IMD five days per week
  • participation in selected executive events
  • access to a relocation firm to help you and your family settle in Lausanne.

Does IMD offer financial aid or scholarships? Yes, IMD offers a number of scholarships and loans. We are commited to ensuring that all admitted students can take their place in the MBA class.

Is it possible to have a job during the program?
No. The IMD MBA is a full-time, intense program. The average work day is 16 hours and there are classes on Saturday morning.

What type of visa is needed to study at IMD?
Nationals of all non-European Community countries need a 'Visa of Entry for Studies' in order to enter Switzerland. IMD will provide all necessary paperwork required by your country of origin for obtaining this visa. While you are responsible for obtaining the visa, IMD will liaise with government officials as required.

What is the emphasis of the IMD MBA program?
The IMD MBA is a general management program that prepares young and experienced professionals with strong leadership potential to tackle complex business challenges, as well as to lead in a responsible manner to achieve extraordinary results.

How long is the program?
11 months, from January to December. Our program is very intensive, with as many class hours, if not more than, many two year MBA programs.

How many participants are in the MBA class?
Only 90 people a year can take our MBA because we believe that world-class business leaders cannot be mass-produced.

Who attends the program?
Highly motivated, international participants with significant achievements to their credit, excellent interpersonal skills, a global mindset and lots of energy to make things happen.

What are start-up projects?
MBA teams work with an early stage start-up venture to learn about the special challenges of entrepreneurship and gain hands-on experience in adding value to a company.

What are leadership experiences?
Off-campus exercises designed to force you to re-evaluate what kind of a leader you want to be and understand what it will take for you to become a more effective leader.

How do the consulting projects work?
Teams of MBA participants work with top management of international firms on strategic issues and synthesize their learning by tackling real business issues, under the supervision of IMD Faculty.

Do I need a computer?
No. Most of our participants bring a laptop with them for convenience, but there are computers available in various parts of the campus and there is a computer in each study room.


What activities are organized at IMD for families?
IMD's partner program helps participants' partners and families get to know each other and become more integrated within the IMD community.

One important method of promoting our participants is the Class Profiles Brochure. A short biography of all participants available for employment is distributed to over 5,000 managers worldwide and 250 organizations receive the IMD MBA résumé portfolio.

Yes, we provide individual coaching and organize multiple workshops and presentations throughout the year to maximize the effectiveness of your résumé, strategy and your networking and interviewing skills.

How should I decide whether to apply for IMD’s full-time MBA or Executive MBA program ?
Where you are in your career is the key decision factor. The MBA is for younger professionals (average class age is 31) with a minimum of 3 years work experience and an average of 7.
The EMBA is for more experienced professionals with company support and at least ten years of solid business experience.

How can I receive a confirmation of my IMD MBA degree? 
While we do not provide performance transcripts for MBA graduates, a letter of confirmation can be requested through MBAInfo@imd.ch. These letters are sent out by email or regular postal mail and the service is free of charge.
