Care to Dare: Unleashing Astonishing Potential through Secure Base Leadership, by IMD Professor George Kohlrieser, has been chosen as one of the 30 Best Business Books of the Year by Soundview Executive Book Summaries.
The book shows how the best leaders break through their own and their followers' fears and complacency to spur real productivity—because they know how to both challenge and nurture. In other words, they "Care to Dare." Professor Kohlrieser identifies these leaders as "Secure Base Leaders."
The book combines the expertise of Professor Kohlrieser and his two co-authors: Susan Goldsworthy, a former Olympic finalist and leadership development executive, and Duncan Coombe, a global organizational consultant and academic.
From extensive interviews and surveys conducted with more than a thousand senior executives around the world, Care to Dare reveals the nine characteristics that Secure Base Leaders display daily.
The research shows that a primary difference between a successful leader and a failed one is the presence or absence of secure bases in his or her life.
Care to Dare outlines four key actions of effective Secure Base Leaders: bonding to develop trust between leaders and followers; learning to accept and move past grief caused by change; focusing the Mind's Eye on goals and benefits rather than pain and negativity; and embracing risk and benefit in order to "play to win."
Care to Dare shows that the leader who cares is essential for sustained high performance, maximum employee engagement, customer service and innovation. The book is published by Wiley and is part of the Warren Bennis leadership series.
