Political and business leaders to take part in Responsible Leadership Summit at IMD
Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Victor Fung, Chairman of Li & Fung and Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce, and Peter Bakker, CEO of TNT, will be among the guest speakers joining a team of IMD Faculty for a Responsible Leadership Summit from February 1-3, 2009 on the IMD campus in Lausanne, Switzerland.
“The current financial turmoil in our world is the result of a leadership crisis,” stated IMD President Dr John R. Wells. “Responsible leadership is about getting positive results in the right way. It should permeate all aspects of our business including making informed and timely choices, developing our people, reporting results in an accurate manner and taking a sustainable approach to management. Given the many public calls for greater responsibility, we are delighted to bring together leaders from the political and business world for the summit to address responsible leadership at the individual, corporate and global level.”
Dr Wells has placed significant focus on the theme of responsible leadership since taking over as IMD President in April 2008.
“IMD has a strong tradition of developing responsible leaders and we will continue to do so,” he said. “Responsible leadership is becoming increasingly important in the world, so we intend to put even more emphasis on it in our teaching and research.”
The Responsible Leadership Summit will run in partnership with the Evian Group at IMD and the International Chamber of Commerce.
The summit will focus on three main areas.
Responsible leadership at the individual level
Leading our teams is a crucial prerequisite for leading our businesses and impacting our world. We will examine topics such as leading ourselves, developing our people responsibly and leading by values. Guest speakers will include a leading Malaysian Muslim academic, Dr Aziuddin Ahmad, and Mrs Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Responsible leadership at the corporate level
In our current turbulent times there is increasing pressure on business leaders to deliver the right results in the right way and to enhance both shareholder and stakeholder value on a long-term basis. We will examine the economic and social benefits of corporate responsibility, including opportunities in alternative energy, environmental sustainability and bottom-of-the-pyramid marketing. Peter Bakker, CEO of TNT, will describe the impact of social responsibility programs on his business. Wendy Luhabe, Chair of the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Ltd, Chancellor of Johannesburg University and former Director of Wiphold, will explain how her microfinance organization has impacted the lives of many women throughout her country. Iqbal Quadir, founder of GrameenPhone and Emergence BioEnergy Inc., will share with us his highly successful bottom-of-the-pyramid model.
Responsible leadership at the global level
Dignitaries and thought leaders from the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and The Evian Group will join participants for plenary sessions and workshops. We will identify critical shifts in economic power, revisit the ICC’s approach of “world peace through world trade” and determine the impact for business in terms of growth and profitability. Victor Fung, Chairman of Li & Fung and Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce, will lead the discussions.
