Chief Information Officers' Roundtable

Managing IT Complexity

  CIO-Roundtable 2013
Topic

Does it feel as if the task of managing IT has become more and more complex? Well, it has…for a variety of reasons. Indeed, surviving and thriving in today's business environment requires overcoming large quantities of complexity. Some of this complexity originates from the external environment, like regulatory changes, new technologies, increasing competition, and globalization. While some of it originates from within the firm, such as the proliferation of products, services, projects, processes, data and structures.

IT lies at the core of this complexity. Most firms are much better at adding systems and applications than they are at decommissioning them, leading to an explosion of IT assets. The management of vendor relationships for infrastructure, applications, and services has become more complicated. Promising technologies, like the cloud, aim to simplify IT operations, but it is unclear whether they will live up to this potential.  In sum, IT can act as both a source of complexity and a mechanism to reduce complexity.

A key role of today's IT executives is to enable an operating environment that simplifies the ability of firms to compete.  The objective of this year's CIO Roundtable is to look at complexity in today's IT world, and to explore strategies and approaches aimed to reduce and manage it.
