How Can Global Leaders Focus for High Performance?November 1, 2013
IMD is honoured to welcome Daniel Goleman to IMD on November 1, 2013. Goleman will introduce us to the themes of his newest book, Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence.
Directing attention to where it needs to go is a primal task of leadership. Leaders not only need to direct their own attention, they are also responsible for directing other's attention. Attention works much like a muscle: use it poorly and it can wither; work it well and it grows. For executives Goleman believes there are three specific kinds of focus that make the difference between mediocre and high performance:
1. Attention on one's self, for the self-awareness that lets one manage their inner world well;
2. Attention on others, for the empathy that lets them build effective relationships and interactions; and
3. Attention on the larger systems in which an organization operates, which dictates what strategy will work best.
Goleman will explain how the well-focused leader achieves balance in all three and skilfully uses the right one at the right time. This triple focus emerges as a hidden driver of excellence.
