| Text | IMD is pleased to announce that Aud Jebsen, widow of the successful shipping entrepreneur Kristian Gerhard Jebsen, has established a professorship in her late husband’s name. The professorship will be held by Dr. Peter Lorange, IMD’s outgoing President. After stepping down as President on April 1, 2008, Dr. Lorange will remain at IMD and continue teaching, conducting research and writing books as the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Professor of International Shipping. In 1967, Kristian Gerhard Jebsen founded Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Skipsrederi AS (KGJS) in Bergen, Norway with the management of two coastal vessels. Since then, the company has grown significantly. Today, the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Group is involved in the ownership, operation and management of vessels in the dry cargo, cement and tank segments. The Group is also involved in terminals and international companies, including Gearbulk, KGJ Cement, SKS OBO and SKS Tankers. Kristian Gerhard Jebsen died in 2004 at the age of 77. By funding an endowed chair, Mrs. Aud Jebsen and the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Group of companies will contribute to IMD’s long-term success, directly supporting efforts to maintain the institution’s pre-eminence in the field of executive research and education – with particular emphasis on shipping. “My husband was passionate about the shipping industry as well as about education,” said Aud Jebsen. “Establishing a professorship at IMD related to international shipping is a fine way to pay tribute to my late husband and ensure that his interests are addressed through the research that will be carried out as part of the endowment. I am sure he would have been pleased to know that his name is associated with this professorship.” Dr. Lorange has been the President of IMD for the last 15 years. During his tenure, he has led the school to dramatic growth in terms of revenues, facility expansion and Faculty, staff and program participant increases. Dr. Lorange, a former shipping executive himself, is an expert in strategy, global strategic management, strategic planning, strategic alliances and strategic control. He has written 18 books and approximately 120 articles. “Kristian Gerhard Jebsen was a brilliant business leader and possessed an incredible understanding of the shipping industry,” commented Dr. Lorange. “He was also a fine human being and a trusted friend. I am truly honored that I will be able to conduct research specifically related to the industry that I am most passionate about and in the name of a highly respected individual.” Dr. Lorange will hold his title as the Nestlé Professor until stepping down as IMD President at the end of the month. Dr. John R. Wells, IMD’s new President as of April, will then assume the Nestlé professorship. There are now 15 company and individual professorships at IMD. |
