| IMD announces re-design of its Forum for Corporate Sustainability Management | |

| Text | Corey Billington, Professor of Procurement and Operations Management at IMD, has been named the new director of the Forum for Corporate Sustainability Management (CSM), one of IMD’s research centers. Professor Billington will take over leadership of the CSM as it continues to address the challenges companies face with regard to sustainability. The CSM will build on its strong research heritage by introducing programs that will support organizations in this crucial area. “Many companies would like to introduce corporate sustainability management, but are unsure of where to start or are discouraged by the size of the undertaking,” stated Professor Billington. “My fondest hope is that we can help companies make a difference in the world through our action learning and comprehensive research agenda.” “In light of the current economic situation, sustainability is more important than ever,” stated IMD President Dr John R. Wells. “Businesses must deliver superior sustainable performance, balancing social, environmental and economic considerations that contribute to their long-term prosperity. Companies need to reduce inefficiency and minimize lost profits while ensuring that they take on their role as global citizens. The CSM plays a significant role in driving forward these messages.” In his first event as director, Professor Billington led a Forum on climate change entitled “Is the giant step forthcoming”, which concluded today with the participation of 35 executives from some 20 CSM member companies. Participants emphasized the importance for companies to shift climate change more rapidly on to their business risk agenda. “While radical innovation around climate change without a strong business case can be a real problem within companies, there is still scope for companies to do more with less in this arena,” Professor Billington noted. “Corporate sustainability management research at IMD has revealed that there is substantial scope to move forward with sustainability strategic agendas by breaking down internal barriers of fixed managerial mindsets and filling knowledge gaps.” Professor Billington and his team will use open innovation techniques and knowledge sharing processes to assist companies in doing more with less with their corporate sustainability management strategies, including those around climate change. To this end, a week-long CSM open-innovation breakthrough program will take place at IMD beginning on September 14, 2009. |
