In today’s tough economic times, it is more important than ever for future leaders to develop the skills, knowledge and real-world experience that will allow them to make an immediate impact in the working world. This is the goal of the Deloitte International Student Business Forum, starting today in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Hosted in association with IMD, 63 students from 21 countries are participating in the three-day forum. Guided by Deloitte member firm leaders and IMD Professor Maury Peiperl, the Student Business Forum provides a select group of university students with a unique opportunity to build their leadership skills while working in multicultural teams. The students will spend the weekend tackling a complex business challenge at the IMD campus and on the slopes, with finalists presenting their solution to a panel of judges.

“Students at the forum experience a real-world business environment, which they typically don’t get in traditional college coursework,” says Vassi Naidoo, Deloitte’s Global Managing Partner, Talent. “Tackling business challenges and gaining practical experience will give them an edge in their future careers. At Deloitte, solving complex business issues is the value our firms provide to clients, and the diversity of engagements provides continuous learning and development for our people.”

Launched three years ago in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, this year’s Forum welcomes students from Canada, Mexico and the United States for the first time, adding to the cultural and social diversity of the event.

“IMD prides itself on offering ‘real world’ learning to executives from around the world,” explains Professor Peiperl. “Thus, we are delighted to collaborate with Deloitte in helping to develop the leadership skills of these students in a multicultural environment.”

In addition to preparing future business leaders who may go on to work at Deloitte member firms or other global corporations, the Student Business Forum aims to help students think about their future careers, and hone the necessary skills to be leaders in any discipline—in corporations, non-governmental organizations or government entities.

“Leaders come from all sectors of society, and, in this day and age, business, government, and community groups can achieve more if they work together,” says Naidoo. “Corporate responsibility is part of the business strategy for Deloitte member firms around the world, and the Student Business Forum gives us an opportunity to contribute to the development of the men and women who will shape the world’s political, economic and social future.”

“Responsible leadership is a key initiative at IMD,” concludes Professor Peiperl. “Career development is an important element of responsible leadership. Mismatches in the psychological contract are a major cause of problems between employers and employees. The Deloitte Student Business Forum is a positive example of how organizations should invest in potential future employees and leaders.”
