President, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL)
Patrick Aebischer has served as President of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) since March 2000. He is also Head of the Neurodegenerative Studies Laboratory at EPFL and, since 2004, a member of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Board. His current research focuses on the development of cell and gene transfer approaches for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
Professor Aebischer trained as an MD and a neuroscientist at the University of Geneva and University of Fribourg (Switzerland). He worked at Brown University (USA) as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Medical Sciences (1984-1992), becoming Chairman of the Section of Artificial Organs, Biomaterials and Cellular Technology of the Division of Biology and Medicine in 1991. In 1992, he returned to Switzerland as a Professor and Director of the Surgical Research Division and Gene Therapy Center at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) in Lausanne.
Professor Aebischer is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and of the Swiss Academy of Medicine. He has founded three biotechnology companies.
